Condwei
Condwei is a firm dedicated to developing consumer healthcare solutions with an emphasis on using embedded technology and the latest telecom standards. Its vision is to create mass market, low cost and easy to use personalised healthcare and lifestyle monitoring systems to help people feel better and live longer.
The Challenge
The challenge was to design a portable electronic device which as a master appliance could connect to, extract, store and display information (such as blood sugar level, weight, body mass index) from a range of health-related measurement devices. The Condwei device would act as the master collector and conduit to personalized storage of information.
The device had to be simple and intuitive to operate and output results, either displayed on the product itself or graphically on a computer.
Aesthetically, the device had to be both discreet and trendy whilst ensuring robust protection for the internal electronics. Another important factor of the design was that it had to be self-contained and modular i.e. able to exist in many formats as a watch, lance, fob or as a coin-like object in your pocket.
Approach
Initial brainstorming sessions with our mechanical engineers and industrial designers provided a range of potential design directions.
Five promising design directions were explored to concept level. Each concept was evaluated against a list of criteria generated from the initial product specification.
The four best concepts were selected and generated to scale in 3D CAD. These concepts were then photo realistically rendered to further enhance their appearance and more accurately reflect the appearance of a manufactured product.
The final product combined the strongest aspects of these concepts.
The Result
The finished design was submitted as part of the Technology Strategy Board grant application for Feasibility Studies for Technology Inspired Innovation.
The competition was exceptionally well supported, with 700 valid applicants. 69 were assessed as suitable for funding and condwei's application was selected for it's inspired innovation.
