Solexa (now part of Illumina)
Solexa's core technology, the Clonal Single Molecule Arraytm technology, allows simultaneous analysis of hundreds of millions of individual molecules. With its unparalleled data density, Solexa's platform will dramatically improve the speed and reduce the cost of a range of genetic analysis applications, including whole-genome resequencing and expression profiling
The Challenge
Solexa's gene sequencing technology operates on a sophisticated hardware platform which includes a microfluidic flowcell mounted in a high performance microscope imager. Accurate sequencing relies on precision optics, temperature control, controlled reagent exposure and highly repeatable positioning.
Approach
eg technology worked closely with Solexa to define the flowcell requirements and then created a range of alternative approaches. eg technology carried out the detailed design of the selected embodiment including selection of materials and manufacturing techniques. We carried out calculations and tests to optimise the microfluidics and reduce the development risk and identified manufacturers capable of meeting Solexa's longer term needs.
The Result
eg technology have developed the robust microfluidic flowcell at the heart of Solexa's technology platform. Solexa have started taking orders for the system and the company has been acquired by Illumina.
