Background

Designed to support NHS staff develop their ideas for new medical technologies, the Innovation Voucher Competition is run by eg partner, Health Tech Enterprise. As such, eg technology sponsored the award offering the winning entrant access to complimentary development time with eg technology’s team of talented and agile engineers, towards the realisation of their innovation. In 2021, having received numerous applications covering a fascinating range of emerging medical technologies, the Innovation Voucher was presented to Dr Ryan Seguna and Dr Jurgen Herre who had designed an innovative solution to mitigate the risk of bone, nerve and organ damage, as well as haemorrhagic complications, for patients undergoing thoracentesis and paracentesis procedures and they were awarded with 2.5 days worth of development time.

The Challenge

Currently, there are potentially serious safety implications surrounding the tools utilised in procedures where fluid and air are extracted from around the lungs and abdomen, exposing the patient to the risk of haemorrhage during the procedure. Dr Seguna and Dr Herre had created a 3D computer-generated image of a tool that lowers the risk to patients undergoing this procedure, but required help in developing the design further to allow prototyping and testing of their innovation. By utilising eg technology’s expertise in medical device design and development, we were able to transform a simple 3D image to one where considerations for manufacture were addressed. This meant that any testing carried out could be integrated into the design iteratively to facilitate volume manufacture.

Utilising eg’s expertise through access to engineering days was key in progressing the development to unlock further access to funding and taking the innovation a step closer to commercialisation.

Conclusion

eg technology worked with the client to understand the critical dimensions of the tool and develop their design in CAD, making it suitable for prototyping and testing their hypothesis. Our expertise in design and manufacture complimented our client’s clinical experience in order to provide them with a design suitable for their needs.
The design review, concept generation and detailed design were carried out within our ISO 13485 framework.
Utilising eg’s expertise through access to engineering days was key in progressing the development to unlock further access to funding and taking the innovation a step closer to commercialisation.

The eg technology team shepherded and supported us through the challenges of designing a new medical device that will enter a trial production run soon.
